One Day in Leeds
A World of Discovery
November 4 2017
One Day in Leeds is an exclusive event where we give our invited guests a special insight into the life and work of the University.
During one memorable day on campus, you will meet our researchers, hear about their achievements in tackling some of the big issues facing society and learn about the role which philanthropy is playing in accelerating their work. You will also see at first-hand how the campus is continuing to develop with new facilities and cutting-edge equipment, enabling advances in important research and strengthening our place as one of the world’s top universities.
You will also learn about exciting new developments in the Arts, and see and hear how Leeds is contributing to culture and creativity, and supporting innovation in many different fields. You also have the opportunity to meet scholars from diverse backgrounds who, thanks to the support of our donors, are able to benefit from all that Leeds has to offer.
In short, you will see why Leeds was named this year’s Times and Sunday Times ‘University of the Year’ – and, we hope, feel a sense of pride in the role which you and other supporters have played in helping us achieve this recognition.
One Day in Leeds will also celebrate the distinctive University of Leeds community, providing time to enjoy the company of students, researchers and other friends and alumni. There will be a black tie dinner in the Great Hall to mark the progress of our Making a World of Difference campaign, and the generosity of our donors.
I have attended several One Day in Leeds events and always find them to be an accessible and interesting opportunity to reconnect and hear and learn about the University’s major contribution to science and cutting edge research and other areas. I also really appreciate the chance to meet students, University representatives and fellow alumni in a most interesting and stimulating environment. I am now even more proud to be a Leeds Alumnus and if you can make it I know you won’t be disappointed.
Peter Blackburn (Philosophy and French 1962), Former Chairman and Chief Executive, Nestlé UK
“I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Leeds and have a sense of pride in what my University is continuing to achieve. The relaxed, informative, sociable programme at One Day in Leeds is a great way to learn about the very latest developments from across the campus and to meet up with the students supported by the University’s benefactors.”
Wilf Eaton (Physics 1967, PhD 1970), Chairman, Information Risk Management plc
“Sue and I really enjoy this event and make it a highlight of our social year and the backbone of a trip back to the UK. It is so rewarding to meet other Benefactors and hear their stories of how much satisfaction they get from their philanthropy”
Peter Cheney (Bacteriology and Biochemistry 1969), Former Co-President of Mars Inc.
“One Day in Leeds is like an extended episode of In Our Time.”

“Each time I go back to campus I learn something new about my old University and the progress it’s making in medicine, engineering, the arts, and in the support it gives to students. One Day in Leeds is a great showcase for all this exciting work.”
Mike Haigh (Civil Engineering 1981), Group Managing Director, Mott MacDonald
“We have been really stimulated by our visits to Leeds. We have had the opportnity to talk to researchers, undergraduates and leading academics. Their enthusiasm is palpable, the range and quality of their work impressive. We’ve seen at first hand how Leeds is now a truly international university, taking its deserved place in the top league. But somehow in all of this it has kept its links with the Yorkshire community, It’s still Leeds, just bigger and better!”
Chris Pointon (Chemistry and Earth Sciences 1970), Private Equity Consultant, and Liz Pointon (nee Welch) (General Studies 1968),
“One Day in Leeds is simply the most motivating and inspirational day of our year.”
Neil Munro (Civil Engineering 1961), Chairman, Neil Munro Associates
