← Armistice boots – a hero’s lifelong tribute to fallen comrades
Picture: Lorne Campbell / Guzelian
Richard High, Collections Engagement Librarian at the University of Leeds, takes a closer look at boots worn by First World War hero William Macdonald every Armistice Day from the first, in 1918 – when he was serving in France aged 21 – to shortly before he died in Leeds, West Yorkshire, in 1989, aged 92.
After leaving the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, Macdonald resumed his medical studies in Edinburgh before moving to Leeds in 1925 for a long and successful career as a GP, lecturer at the University of Leeds and medical officer in the fledgling NHS.
