From Atoms to Devices 10 WHY LEEDS The ambition embodied in the Engineering and Physical Sciences Quarter mirrors that of Leeds as a whole: • The departments it brings together enjoy international reputation and impact. The 2014 Research Excellence Framework ranked Electronic and Electrical Engineering number two in the UK, Mechanical Engineering third, while Physics and Chemistry were rated fourth nationally for the impact of their research. Over 80% of engineering research was rated ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’. • Our range of expertise is genuinely distinctive – polymers, liquid crystals, terahertz lasers, bio- nanoelectrics, spintronics, piezo-electric materials, surface engineering, fluid dynamics and microscale manufacturing. • It draws on the remarkable Leeds culture of collaboration both between academics of different disciplines and with industry. Our Institute of Mechanical and Biological Engineering, which combines expertise in textiles, medicine, biology and engineering, has given thousands of patients a new lease of life with replacement hip and knee joints, heart valves and vascular patches.
