For solicitors enquiring on behalf of clients

If you are a solicitor with a client wishing to include a gift to the University in their Will, we hope you will find the following information helpful.

Name and address

The University should be referred to as ‘University of Leeds’.  Our address is: Woodhouse Lane, Leeds, LS2 9JT, UK.

Charitable status

The University is an ‘exempt charity’ under Schedule 3 of the Charities Act 2011.  It does not have a registered number issued by the Charities Commission but is in law a charity by Royal Charter, granted in 1904. The University’s reference number with the charity division of HM Revenue and Customs is X6861.

Our Remembering Leeds legacies guide and suggested legacy wording are available to download.

If your client has a particular purpose in mind for their legacy, we recommend that you or they get in touch with us so that we can provide more specific guidance and wording.

Saying thank you

We welcome the opportunity to thank anyone who includes to a gift to the University in their Will and invite them to join our Brotherton Circle. If your client is happy to share their intentions with us, they can do so by completing a Remembering Leeds form.

For solicitors and executors administering a Will

All gifts in Wills are looked after by Caroline Bartholomew, +44 (0)113 343 2347, who is authorised to give a proper receipt and discharge to executors.

Legacies for a specific faculty, school or department, or for the University’s libraries, Special Collections or galleries, should still be sent to Caroline and she will ensure that the funds are directed appropriately.

We would be grateful if could let us know as soon as possible that the University is a beneficiary of a Will so that we can amend our records promptly to ensure that future mailings are not sent to the deceased.

When getting in touch with us it is helpful if you can provide the following:

  • the full name and title of the deceased
  • their last address
  • the date of death
  • the executor’s name and contact details
  • a copy of the Will.

Payments

Cheques should be payable to ‘University of Leeds’ and sent to:

Caroline Bartholomew, Development Officer (Legacies), Alumni & Development Team, 11th Floor E C Stoner Building, University of Leeds, Leeds, LS2 9JT

If you wish to make a payment by bank transfer or other means, Caroline will be pleased to provide the necessary details.

Property, shares and non-monetary gifts

In most cases we prefer to receive the sale proceeds of property or shares gifted to the University.  However, each individual case is different so before taking any action to either transfer or sell the property or shares, please get in touch with Caroline Bartholomew, +44 (0)113 343 2347.

Enquiries about gifts of items to the University’s libraries, galleries or Special Collections should also be directed to Caroline in the first instance.  You may also wish to refer to the Library’s collection policy.

Please note that we do not usually collect items, but we may be able to make arrangements to do so in exceptional circumstances.

Tax

Because the University has charitable status, gifts are deducted from the estate before inheritance tax is calculated.  The University is also usually exempt from capital gains tax, and we can reclaim income tax that has been deducted at source.

Tax is a complex area, so to avoid the estate paying more tax than necessary we recommend consulting a professional adviser.
